Petronas strikes gas offshore Borneo island

Oilfield Technology,

Petronas has announced the discovery of a significant gas find offshore Borneo island, Malaysia in the Kasawari field. A well test conducted by Petronas gave a yield of 29 million ft3 per day.

It is now believed that the Kasawari field could hold up to 3 trillion ft3 of recoverable natural gas (out of a total of 5 trillion ft3), making it one of Malaysia’s largest gas fields. The most recent test well was drilled in November last year to a total depth of 3196 m and uncovered a gas column of approximately 1000 m, which Petronas has claimed is the largest single column yet discovered in Malaysia.

This most recent find comes in the wake of an earlier discovery by Petronas in September of last year. A test well in the neighbouring NC8SW field hit estimated recoverable natural gas reserves of 450 billion ft3; Petronas has also hinted at the possibility of an oil play, which would require further appraisal.

A statement released by Petronas said: “For 2012, Petronas and its production sharing contractors are planning to drill 30 exploration wells to further enhance the prospect of Malaysia’s basins.”
