SPS has been used to permanently reinstate deck areas on-board Modec’s, ABS Classed, FPSO, Baobab Ivoirien MV10 whilst on station 25km off the Ivory Coast.
A reduced heat input method was used to reinstate steel in a number of areas on decks B,C, D, the top of the wheel house and upper deck. Perimeter bars were adhered using structural adhesives to the deck and new top plates (6 - 8 mm thick) welded to the bars to form airtight cavities into which the 25 mm elastomer core was injected.
Work started on this project on the 23 November 2017 and a schedule of work phased over the next three months concluding on 25 February 2018. The vessel remained in-service throughout the entire project and operations were completely unaffected by the essential maintenance programme. Areas reinstated were in the accommodation block. Insulation and piped services were unaffected by the work.
SPS licensee, ASOM installed the steelwork and a specialist SPS engineer supervised the injection of the elastomer core.

Saw Kean Huah, Project Manager (MMS), MODEC, observed, “The SPS low heat input solution was selected for the upgrade of the accommodation deck and upper deck reinstatement on FPSO Baobab Ivoirien MV10. SPS caused minimal disruption to on-board operations.
SPS Operations Manager, Mohammad Farihim who oversaw the project commented, “The selection of SPS mean minimal heat input into the existing deck. The associated risks were accessed and the use of SPS eliminated below deck work. This significantly reduced downtime and costs. An SPS solution can be designed in accordance with a client’s requirements and is permanently approved by major classifications societies.”
