Fugro and Planck Aerosystems have been awarded an Environmental Leadership Award from The Maritime Alliance for their joint efforts in mapping oil leakage from disused offshore well sites in Santa Barbara County.

The award was given during The Maritime Alliance’s BlueTech Week, an event that saw over 485 marine experts from academia, industry and government meet to discuss sustainable ocean practices.

As a result of the project – which was undertaken on behalf of Fugro customer Aqueos Corp. under contract to the NGO Heal the Ocean – the California State Assembly passed legislation that will fund oil and gas well removal until 2028.

In announcing the award, The Maritime Alliance praised the collaboration between the companies in seeking to benefit the oceans.

“We are grateful to be recognised by The Maritime Alliance for this collaboration,” said Todd Mitchell, remote sensing manager for Fugro. “Partnerships such as this are an important part of our business process, and we are pleased to have helped facilitate a solution that has effected legislative change for the good of all stakeholders.”
