Wintershall has restarted production from the offshore oil field Al Jurf in Libya and has reportedly restarting production at some if its onshore oil fields too after it flew in a skeleton crew of 20 to the south eastern desert to restart the fields.
Apparently none of the fields have been damaged as locals allied to the NTC have guarded the sites from looting and vandalism.
Wintershall has been producing oil in Libya since 1958. With investments of more than two billion US dollars and over 150 wells drilled, the company is also one of the largest oil producers in Libya.
Due to the political upheaval, which started in February this year, Wintershall took the decision to suspend and seal of production at its fields in the Libyan desert for safety reasons.
Before the unrest the company was producing approximately 100,000 bpd of oil operating in eight onshore fields in concessions 96 and 97 in the Libyan desert.
Wintershall also holds a share in the offshore oil field Al Jurf (Block C 137) off the coast of Libya in a consortium with the Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC) and French company TOTAL. Production from this offshore field already began again a few days ago.
