US and China join forces to develop low carbon coal technology
Duke Energy and China Huaneng Group will work together to develop Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology for coal-fired power plants. The US environmental group Clean Air Task Force has commended the project, which it facilitated and which it sees as a model for similar bilateral co-operation on developing low carbon technology in the future.
Duke Energy is currently developing a new IGCC project in Edwardsport, Indiana. China Huaneng Group has a demonstration project in Beijing and is a partner in the GreenGen project, located near Tianjin.
To date, a significant impediment to the development of CCS technology has been the cost implications. An IGCC power plant can cost three times more than a standard power plant, and using IGCC technology has the potential to double the price of electricity. It is hoped that initiatives such as this will help to speed up the commercialisation of low-carbon technology, thereby reducing the costs associated with it.
