Port of Antwerp team up with EXMAR for LNG bunkering

The Antwerp Port Authority has selected EXMAR to be its partner in developing liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering at the port in Belgium. Construction of the ship is expected to begin in early 2014. Fuel studies will also be undertaken by both parties.

CEO of Antwerp Port Authority Eddy Bruyninckx, said: "The Port Authority wishes to not only encourage but also to facilitate the use of LNG as ship fuel because of the associated environmental and sustainable benefits. The Port Authority therefore wants to ensure that ships calling the port of Antwerp are able to bunker LNG as ship fuel as from 2015."

Nicholas Sarveys, CEO of EXMAR Group, which is based in Antwerp and both LNG and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers, endorsed LNG bunkering as “a strategic target market for the coming years. Independent studies”, he said “indicate that the LNG bunkering market has a worldwide potential of an additional tens of millions of tonnes of LNG per year by 2020."

Sarveys stressed that EXMAR’s knowledge and experience of transferring LNG through flexible hoses will be a major factor in contributing to the success of LNG bunkering.
