China closes 1355 coal mines in first three quarters of this year
Xinhua News Agency, the official press agency of the Chinese Government, has reported that 1355 small coal mines, with a total production of 125.19 million t, were shutdown in the first three quarters of this year as part of efforts to restructure the country’s mining industry.
The figures from the National Energy Administration (NEA) indicate that it has passed its target of closing 121.67 million t of outdated production this year.
The energy watchdog also said it would strengthen inspection on small coal mines for the rest of the year and ensure that the mining restructuring plan be completed as scheduled this year.
China has long relied on coal to fuel its rapid economic growth. About three-fourths of its electricity is generated from coal-fired power stations, according to the NEA.
