Well intervention technology for field in Norwegian Continental Shelf

Oilfield Technology,

Well intervention specialist Interwell has successfully installed and retrieved its award-winning expandable junk catcher add-on (EJCA) in multiple wells in a Statoil operated field in the Norwegian Continental Shelf, resulting in considerable cost and time savings for the operator.

Interwell’s technology was used as part of an on-going campaign to remove and replace old Christmas trees.

Overcoming challenges and reducing intervention time
During this type of intervention, scale can present challenges in setting and retrieving barrier plugs. Under traditional procedures, separate junk baskets are run on top of the plug to catch falling debris. The baskets have to be set and retrieved by additional runs resulting in significant time consumption and risks of the scale being scraped from the tubing wall and pushed on top of the plug when running in hole.

Cleaning the top of the plug from debris under traditional procedures could take multiple days. Interwell’s existing and technically proven medium expansion plug integrates the EJCA and requires only one run to install and retrieve, which has resulted in reducing Statoil’s intervention operational time by approximately 24 hours.

Andrew Louden, Interwell UK Managing Director said: “We strive to produce safe and effective solutions for our clients’ intervention needs and our expandable junk catcher add-on does exactly that; it provides a safe solution to effectively collect debris within the wellbore.

“The successful completion of Statoil’s well challenge further underlines our commitment to ensuring enhanced oil and gas recovery for clients across the globe.”

About Interwell
Interwell specialises in a range of uniquely slim mechanical plugs and straddles. These are used to reinstate well integrity and enhance well performance through shutting off reservoir zones or by retrofitting artificial lift. The company is actively working on several well-abandonment and decommissioning projects.

Headquartered in Norway, Interwell also has offices in the UK, the Middle East, Malaysia and the USA, employing more than 240 people globally and supporting operations around the world.
