Oilfield Technology,

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply has trained procurement teams in over 30 organisations in the Aberdeen oil and gas sector since the launch of the CIPS Oil & Gas Corporate Award Advanced Practitioner Programme in 2010 and is now launching the first Practitioner programme for standard-level practitioners in July.

The programme is tailored specifically for the sector and raises the professionalism of procurement and supply management through an applied learning route. A range of topics including sourcing essentials, managing markets, financial and legal aspects of procurement will be covered and participants are assessed through a number of assignments applying learning directly towards achieving organisational goals as well as personal development.

Over 90 individuals have gone through the programme and as well as improving their skills, have achieved full CIPS professional status (MCIPS). Organisations include Technip UK Limited, KCA Deutag, GE Oil & Gas, 80:20 Procurement, Prosafe, AMEC, Cameron Subsea, Centrica Energy, BP and Total E&P.

Stuart Hay from PSCM Strategy at Prosafe Offshore limited, commented, “Meeting people from similar roles across the industry was very beneficial in terms of sharing knowledge and discussing the challenges we all face. The programme introduced a number of good tools and ideas in how to meet these challenges more strategically.”

Group CEO, CIPS, David Noble said of the activity: “Energy must be one of the biggest challenges in the 21st century – the sourcing, conservation of resources and surety of supply.”

”Procurement and supply chain professionals play a vital, crucial role in ensuring the energy needs of all our futures. Skilled and trained professionals are highly-sought-after not just in this sector but related sectors as well so individuals benefit on a personal level as well as managing supply chains effectively for the organisations they work for.”

Adele Lynch from GE Oil & Gas said, “I found the range of topics varied and interesting. Mix this with the knowledge and experience of the lecturers along with open discussions with other students from  other companies made the course not just an assignment based learning experience but very interactive and enlightening. Doing this course has given me the confidence to realise I can make a difference to my business.”

The practitioner programme is suitable for anyone with procurement and supply chain management responsibility as a stock planner, inventory controller, buyer or assistant buyer, contract analyst, purchasing executive or inventory controller.

Six Advanced Practitioner programmes have been completed and a 7th will start in July. Group 8 will begin in the autumn.
